Petrol tune-up vol.1: Injection cleaning

One could say a car is meant to get dirty. Oil, pistons, exhaust system, brakes – everything gets dirty and continues delivering more or less similar power to a certain extent. However there is one part of the engine that really causes a difference in performance when dirty: injectors. Clogged injectors are an issue that could lead to even bigger problems. Let’s find out how can you detect injector issues and how to fix them.

Clogged injectors symptoms

Over time, the injectors suffer from the combustion inside the engine. Gasoline and diesel, both derived from petroleum, are not the cleanest fuels in the world and they always generate residue inside the engine.

When this debris is left to build up, it doesn’t allow for a proper fuel scattering and can even cause leaks or block the fuel flow.

If this is the case, the driver should notice one of the following signs:

• Increase in pollution, especially noticeable in the government’s technical inspection of vehicles.
• Lower performance with an increase in fuel consumption
• Starter issues (engine knocking, strange sounds)
• Randomly bucking or surging

Injector cleaning solutions

The 3 most common ways to clean injectors are:

• Disassembling and cleaning with an ultrasonic machine
• Disassembling some parts and cleaning with compressed air
• Not disassembling at all and cleaning with additives

The methods which include disassembling should only be undertaken by a professional. Not only because it’s necessary to have some engine knowledge but especially because of the machinery needed.

Of course, there are some DIY kits but they usually require some dismantling and this can be a bit intimidating for some users.

Your own injector cleaning kit
